The four Geneva conventions of 1949 ang the protocols of the 1977⁶ protect certain civil and political rights during armed conflict. Civil and political rights are also feslth with in regional instruments such as the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of a Man,⁷ the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms,⁸ (ECHR), the Charter of the Organization of American Stated,⁹ the American Convention of Human Rights and protocols to the ECHR and the American Convention,¹⁰ and the African Charter of Human and People’s Rights ¹¹. The following civil and political rights are found in one or more of these or other instruments, The right to life ¹², Freedom from Genocide¹³, Freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment ¹⁴. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, annexed to General Assembly resolution no. 260 (III) which was adopted on 9 December 1948, entered force into 12 January 1951.
